Travel Diary: Must See List in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Bali

November 1, 2013

Two weeks ago was my reading break! I took the opportunity to take a week long trip around Southeast Asia. I managed to hit 3 cities in 11 days and here’s a quick summary of each city!

Singapore

Β
Singapore Zoo: One of the best part about Singapore was their Zoo, River Safari, and Night Safari. We were able to see the red panda as well as the giant panda in the river safari! They are SOOOO CUTE!

Sentosa Island was surprisingly beautiful despite its many tourist traps. Most of the attractions on the island required additional fees but we just spent the day walking around without spending a penny! πŸ™‚

City View: We biked around downtown Singapore to check out the buildings and scenery. The structures are all so creative and interesting!

Overall the city was much more developed and westernized than I thought it would be! There wasn’t much of a culture shock although the city has a very rich mix of ethnicity. If you are looking for nightlife, definitely head to Clarke QuayΒ the vibe there is amazing. I think Singapore is the perfect weekend trip to get away! It is best for those who like the city life, amusement parks, and is looking for a more developed southeast Asia destination.

Kuala Lumpur

City Center: We took a walk around the city center to get a feel for the history and the culture but unfortunately most of the mosques were not open to visitors and there was not many tourist attractions around.

Fish Spa: You can find these all over the city but we went to the one in Central Market. For around $5 CAD you can get your feet nibbled on by fish for 15 mins. It was a crazy sensation but it really left my feet smooth afterwards! πŸ™‚

Petronas Towers: The most iconic landmark of Kuala Lumpur is the twin towers. Over 100 floors high, it dazzles at night and gives off an aura of royalty. It is absolutely gorgeous, must see during the day and night.
Batu Caves: Located an hour away from the city but surprisingly easy and comfortable to get to via the subway system. So glad we made the trip here. A major tourist spot here with a golden statute. After climbing to the cave we also did a tour where we learned about the ecosystems inside a dark cave.

*And if you can tell the difference in quality of pictures. The good ones are from my friend! Thanks Nathan!*
To be honest, I didn’t find anything too unique about Kuala Lumpur. I got to try some interesting food items such as fried sting ray! It’s an good place to visit for more cultural trips. It doesn’t have as much to offer in the form of amusement parks or relaxation.

Bali

Beach + Sunset: On the first day, we arrived just in time to walk on the beach at sunset and oh my goodness. It was the most beautiful thing! We watched the sunset three days in a row and it does not get old.

Watersports: Another thing to do on the beach is to take advantage of the water sports! I was able to take an hour surfing lesson for $10 USD, and go scuba diving for $35USD! Make sure you bargain πŸ˜‰

Hire a Car: Even though the city is such a popular tourist designation, the actual country is still in the developing phase. Which means cheap labor! We hired a car/driver to take us around for 10 hours for $65 USD. If you are going with a group of friends, it really is affordable! They know all the spots on the island that are famous and you don’t have to worry about anything!

Overall, Bali was definitely my favorite city out of the three! I love the beach and water so it was perfect! And everything was so cheap which made it possible to do all sorts of activities. They also have cheap spas and massages too! If you are looking for a relaxing vacation I would definitely recommend a trip to Bali. <3

Have you ever visited any of these places before? Where else should I go in Southeast Asia?
