Travel Diary: Weekend Trips from Vancouver: Whistler, Washington, Bowen Island

With the long weekend coming up, I thought I'd share some ideas on where to go and short trips I've done around Vancouver! Read on for some outdoorsy adventures.

Although most people know Whistler as a ski destination, it's quite fun during the summer time too. Good vibes in the village and pretty nature scenery, you can even catch mountain biking competitions. See my full post recapping my adventure last year including finding last minute deals!

Camping in Washington
Camping in Washington State has some cool sites that have yurts and cabins. Also, the drive down is about the same time it takes to get to the island or drive to Kelowna. See my full post here recapping camping, sea kayaking and shucking oysters!

Bowen Island

This is probably the easiest trip and one day is enough! Bowen Island is only a 20 minute ferry ride away from Horseshoe Bay. I did this trip last weekend and had tons of fun!

Ferry Ride: I would suggest not taking your car over to the island. We parked at the Horseshoe Bay terminal which costed $12 for 8 hours. Then we just bought passenger tickets for the ferry which was $12 for round trip! There's ferries every hour except a mid-day break. See the schedule here.

Pack a Picnic: The highlight of our trip was having a really delicious charcuterie "board" right by the water. We picked up the meat, cheese, condiments at the Whole Foods at Park Royal on the way to Horseshoe Bay. It was really peaceful and felt so relaxing to just watch boats and sit by the beach. I saw people swimming, so that's definitely doable too!

Take a Hike: There's quite a few trails on the island especially in Crippen Park which can be found just a couple minutes walk away from the ferry terminal. There's a lake towards the middle of the island that would be a good hike! We got lazy but it's only about a 35 minute walk to the lake and then a 45 minute walk to go around it. When you get off the ferry terminal, you can grab a map from the Bowen Island Visitor Center.

Stay the Night: You can also find a B&B to stay the night to extend your relaxation. Here's some recommendations from Trip Advisor. They all look so amazing but we unfortunately didn't have the budget for it this time around.

So what are your plans this weekend? Have you been to any of these places before?
