Valentine's Day Dessert Options in Vancouver

The holiday season has just ended but it's now only 2 weeks before it's Valentine's Day. I have gone out to eat dinner with my boyfriend for the past couple of years but I thought I'd skip the dinner recommendations and introduce some other options for Valentine's Day. These dessert joints will be sweet (literally & figuratively ;)) and much lighter on the wallet!

I've selected establishments throughout the city so you can find a great spot near you! Also, all of these places have seating so you can take your time chatting to your loved ones and enjoying these treats.

Gastown
Zomato- 3.0

This new dessert and champagne bar opened in Gastown and is the hippest place for after dinner. This is the most upscale option in my list. I thought the concept was so unique and would be a romantic spot on Valentine's Day!

On Feb 14th, they will be having a special menu for $38 per person that includes: champagne, cheese plate, raspberry violet, warm chocolate tart, and your choice of chocolate/macaron!

GOSH Xtreme Mascara Review

The last mascara to be reviewed in this month's makeup review series is the GOSH Xtreme Mascara! This came out last year as part of their Spring 2015 collection and is available exclusively at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Basics
Name: GOSH Xtreme Mascara
Shade: Black (one option)
Price: $16
Size: 10mL
Available at Shoppers Drug Mart

What GOSH Claims:
The soft fibers and the triangular-shaped brush gives lashes a triple-whammy makeover - xtreme volume, maximum length and major definition. Combined with a double formula bulk, the result is fabulous lashes with a spectacular false lash effect.

The brush has three sides and varies in length. It has a natural fiber which is my preferred mascara wand. I find the spacing of the wand to be perfect to coat my lashes without clumping! I haven't found any issues with smudging or flaking.

From reading online, the formulation is made with double effects of hard waxes and synthetic polymers. Lower viscosity is for volume and higher viscosity is for lengthening. The hard waxes have higher viscosity and gives lengthening to the lashes while synthetic polymer have lower viscosity and gives volume to the lashes.

I found this to be really great at separating out my lashes but I do find that it gives a similar result to my NYC Angel Lash Mascara which is $10 cheaper! This is more of a lengthening/separating mascara than a volumizing one but I do enjoy using it as I do not have to fear about clumpy lashes!

Mascara Ratings
Big lashes: 4/5
Blackness: 5/5
No clumping: 5/5
No flaking/smudging: 5/5
Easy to take off: 5/5
Value: 4/5

Overall 28/30    A

Recap

Out of the four mascara I reviewed, I think the mascara that gives the biggest lashes is the Stila Huge Extreme Mascara, but it is the most expensive. The best everyday mascara would go to the NYC Angel Lash Mascara for it's affordability and a comfortable wear.

Did you guys enjoy reading multiple reviews of one type of makeup products? In February, I will be talking about foundations so if that's something you are looking to buy, stay tuned for thoughts on four face products!

Softlips LUXE Review + Giveaway

New product alert! The original Softlips are the skinny lip balms we've all grown to love. But recently they launched a new line of lip balms called Softlips LUXE. This new lip balm contains a 5-in-1 lip perfecting technology and is housed in a sleek glass-like packaging with a twist up like a lipstick.

There are two flavors available: Creamy Coconut and Silky Shea.

Texture: These lipbalms have a thin texture similar to EOS. However, I find it to be much creamier more like fresh lip balms. It feels very moisturizing on the lips.

Scent: Normally I'm not a fan of coconut but I've been loving Creamy Coconut. The Silky Shea is exactly what you'd imagine. It's a lighter scent with a tiny bit of nuttiness poking through.

Packaging: I actually really like this packaging although I think it could have been a bit skinnier. I like the lipstick shaped applicator as well. The twist up does feel a bit cheap but at it's price point, I can't really complain!

Overall, I'm very impressed with these lipbalms. It's thin texture makes it easy to wear underneath lipstick but it's definitely more creamy so it feels very moisturizing. The packaging is also sophisticated and I'd be happy to display this on my counter or vanity.

NYC Big Bold Angel Lash Mascara Review

Next on the mascara review is the NYC Big Bold Angel Lash Mascara. If you missed my two previous mascara reviews, click to see the Stila Huge Extreme Mascara and the Revlon Bold Laquer Mascara. Today's feature is one of the cheapest options out there for mascara so let's see if it's a bargain hit or fail!

Basics
Name: NYC Big Bold Angel Lash Mascara
Shade: Extra Black (one option)
Price: ~$4
Size: 12mL
Find it at your local drugstore

What NYC Claims:
Get the wide-eyed look, pure and innocent yet so alluring. Volume that feels as light as feathers. Dramatically volumized, fuller, thicker, curvier lashes.

The wand is a nice hourglass shape with natural bristles. When I pulled it out of the tube, I knew I'd like the bristles look well separated with no excess product build up. The formula is not too wet which I enjoy. I do agree that this does not leave your lashes crunchy. One of the main ingredients is beeswax which contributes to the weightless, soft feel.

This mascara provides really great separation and I never have to worry about clumping. It gives me good length, volume and holds a curl! I can wear this all day without it smudging or flaking. I've checked in at 8 hours as well as 10 hours and although it doesn't look as fresh as when first applied, it held up quite nicely long into the evening!

Mascara Ratings
Big lashes: 4/5
Blackness: 5/5

No flaking/smudging: 5/5

Value: 5/5

Overall 29/30    A+

Overall I'm a huge fan of this mascara and is such a great deal for the price. If you haven't given NYC a try in years, make sure to check out their new products as they've really stepped up their game!

Revlon Bold Laquer Mascara Review

Up next in my January Mascara review series is the Revlon Bold Lacquer Length and Volume Mascara. I actually finished this mascara in my latest Project Pan, but I wanted to put up this review!

Basics
Name: Revlon Bold Lacquer Mascara
Shade: Blackest Black(3 options)
Price: $7.99 CAD
Size: 7mL
Find it at your local drugstore

What Revlon says:
"The Ultimate Black Bold Definition! Get Volume + Length to the nth degree. Our first mascara with only high shine black fibers."

This mascara has a standard wand with natural bristles. The bristles are tightly packed together and sometimes contains too much product. There was a lot of product build up in my brushes as I used it. I had to use a tissue paper to squeeze out some of the product to ensure it doesn't clump my lashes.

I like that the tapered end makes it easy to pick up the lashes in the corner. Although the Revlon description says "high shine", I wouldn’t say that you get a super dark dramatic lash look. This does well with everyday length but does not provide a lot of volume nor "high shine".

I do like that it didn't make my eyelashes feel crunchy. It kept a soft fluttery feel all day so it would be good for going to school or work where you want to feel comfortable and don't mind a bit less drama. It wore well for 4 hours and still looked fresh and lifted. However at the 8 hour mark, the lashes have drooped and I lost a lot of length.

There are lots of online reviews that say this mascara flaked on them but I didn't experience any flaking or smudging.

Mascara Ratings
Big lashes: 4/5
Blackness: 4/5
No clumping: 3/5
No flaking/smudging: 5/5
Easy to take off: 5/5
Value: 4/5

Overall 25/30    B

Overall, the mascara was just okay. With tons of great drugstore options these days, I'd probably pass on this unless you find a great sale. It does offer a comfortable wear and good length but there was nothing too special about the formula.

CND VINYLUX Aurora Collection Swatches

The CND Aurora collection is inspired by the beauty of the Arctic tundra. There are four shades in this collection that can work together to create the perfect winter nail.

The VINYLUX system is designed to endure a whole week of wear. The technology in these polishes is suppose to increase durability with natural light. They only lasted about 3 days on me until it began to have minor chips. This is pretty normal for me but I was hoping these would last for longer.

Winter Glow- Cream pastel pink, it's a gorgeous office appropriate nail color.
Tundra- Metallic dusty rose, this brings back the days of Spice Girls.

Nordic Lights- Plum jelly with fine and chunky holographic glitter
Glacial Mist- Icy pale blue with silver shimmer that evokes the beauty of the arctic perfectly!

The polishes were all easy to apply and were opaque in 2 coats (3 for Winter Glow depending on how thick your layers are). I think the colors are so perfect for the collection and are a welcomed difference from other "winter" collections which feature deep colors. I think Glacial Mist and Tundra would be really good accent colors if you are doing nail art. My favorite out of the bunch is Nordic Lights as it's such a unique color. The shimmer in the polish are different sizes and it creates an awesome 3D look.

These are some designs that the professionals can create with this collection! They are so drool worthy! But I can't even begin to attempt any of these. If you are interested in these shades, CND is available at Trade Secrets, Chatters, and salons nationwide.

Stila Huge Extreme Lash Mascara Review

Hello 2016!! I can't believe it's the start of a new year. One of my goals for this year is to review more makeup items. So for each month, I will have a category and 4 reviews will be posted related to a product in that category.

For January, we will be looking at mascara!! I have about 7 tubes of mascara open right now and I need to get around to reviewing and using them up. First up we have the Stila Huge Extreme Lash Mascara which I listed it in my 2015 Favorites!

Basics
Name: Stila Huge Extreme Lash Mascara
Shade: Black (1 option only)
Price: $30CAD
Size: 13mL
Find it at Sephora, Stila online, or Shoppers

What Stila claims this mascara will do:
Smudge-proof and long-wearing
Triple-pigments saturate lashes with deep black formula
Formulated with a blend of soft, malleable waxes to keep lashes from feeling clumpy or crunchy
Dense yet flexible wand with crimped fibers that pull lashes up and out

The formula is quite wet so you need to be careful when applying to not blink too much or else it will hit under your eye. The brush is a bit crazy looking when you first take it out. The bristles are not uniformly spaced out and definitely not the same length. Towards the ends, the bristles are longer, and in the middle the wand curves and the bristles are quite short.

With this mascara you have to remember not to zig zag when you apply or else it will clump. But I can keep building up the layers and my lashes look so long when I wear this! It also stays on all day. Even at 8 hours, my lashes were looking great! I experienced no smudging/flaking when I wear this. If you just use one coat you can get a natural every day look, but it's also very easy to build up so this mascara is great for all occasions!

Mascara Ratings
Big lashes: 5/5
Blackness: 5/5
No clumping: 4/5
No flaking/smudging: 5/5
Easy to take off: 5/5
Value: 4/5

Overall 28/30    A

Overall I'm a huge fan of this mascara as it creates long full lashes without feeling crunchy! It lasts all day for me and holds my lashes up really well. I would definitely recommend you try this out if you are looking for some drama in your lashes!
